Dental Extractions Perth

A throbbing toothache, a broken tooth that cannot be repaired, or wisdom teeth causing trouble? You are not alone, and a tooth extraction is a routine procedure we perform.

Our boutique practice on St Georges Terrace has offered dental extractions in Perth for over 50 years.

We always try to save a tooth first, and when we can’t, we make removing it as gentle as possible.

Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Extraction is always the last resort, so we X-ray the tooth first to see if it can be saved. You may need one for:

  • Severe tooth decay too deep for a filling or root canal to repair
  • Advanced gum disease that has damaged the bone holding the tooth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain, infection or decay nearby
  • A broken tooth below the gum line, or crowding before orthodontics

An active infection or abscess may need treating first.

Types of Tooth Extraction

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gum line. It is done under local anaesthetic and usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth has broken at the gum, has not fully come through, or has curved roots. Your dentist makes a small incision to reach it, sometimes closing it with a few stitches.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Your third molars sit at the very back of the mouth. Many wisdom teeth extractions are done comfortably in our chair. Complex cases may be referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for removal under general anaesthetic.

How Much Does a Tooth Extraction Cost in Perth?

There is no single price for teeth extraction in Perth, because every mouth is different.

Treatment Typical Cost
Simple extraction $300 – $350
Surgical extraction $350 – $400
Wisdom tooth (in chair) $300 – $400
General anaesthetic Referred and quoted by the specialist

The Tooth Extraction Process at Perth City Dental

01

Consultation and X-Ray

We X-ray the roots and surrounding bone, then explain your options and costs.

02

Numbing the Area

Local anaesthetic makes the area completely numb. You will feel pressure, but you should not feel pain.

03

Removing the Tooth

We gently loosen the tooth and lift it out. For a surgical extraction, a small incision gives us access.

04

Protecting the Socket

Gauze over the extraction site helps stop the bleeding and forms a protective blood clot.

05

Your Free Follow-Up

We check your healing process at a free follow-up appointment.

Most extractions take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the tooth.

Looking After Yourself After an Extraction

Good aftercare protects the blood clot and helps you avoid complications during your recovery.

The First 24 Hours

  • Keep biting on the gauze to control bleeding
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully
  • Rest and sleep with your head slightly elevated
  • Use ice packs on your cheek to reduce swelling, on and off for 48 to 72 hours
  • Avoid hard exercise

The Following Days

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals
  • Eat soft, lukewarm foods like mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs, chewing on the opposite side
  • Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw for at least 24 hours, ideally a week, to prevent dry socket
  • Take pain medication as your dentist advises

Call us on (08) 9321 5721 if you have severe pain, heavy bleeding or signs of infection.

See our emergency dentistry page for after-hours advice.

The gum usually heals in about two weeks. Your dentist will then talk you through replacing missing teeth with dental implants or a bridge if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Extractions Perth

Most people rest for 24 to 48 hours. After a simple extraction, you can usually return to desk work the next day, while a surgical or wisdom tooth extraction may need three to seven days.

We can provide a medical certificate for your employer.

Not during the procedure, because local anaesthetic numbs the area. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal and usually settles with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Yes. A tooth extraction is a routine procedure carried out by a registered dentist in a clinical setting.

Tell us about any medical conditions and medications, especially blood thinners, so we can plan your treatment safely.

Protecting the blood clot in the socket matters most, because your gum heals over it. Rest for the first day, stay hydrated and eat soft, nourishing foods.

Avoid smoking, alcohol and straws, which slow healing or dislodge the clot. From day two, rinse gently with warm salt water, and come to your free follow-up so we can check your progress.

There is no fixed number. It depends on your health and how complex each tooth is. Several teeth, or all four wisdom teeth, can often come out in one visit, sometimes under sedation. Your dentist will recommend what is safe before you have a tooth extracted.
